The short answer

Google Ads in South Africa cost what each click costs, times the clicks you buy. Estimated average costs per click for common searches run from under R10 ("dentist near me") through R20 to R35 for most local services (plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, lawyers) to about R300 for "car insurance" (Semrush estimates, September 2026). There is no minimum spend, and the traffic stops the day the budget does.

How Google Ads pricing works

  • You pay per click. Showing the ad is free; each click costs money.
  • Every search is an auction. Advertisers bid for the same search, and the price rises with the number of businesses competing for that customer.
  • Quality lowers the price. Google weighs how relevant your ad and landing page are, so a better page can pay less per click than a competitor bidding more.
  • You set the budget. There is no minimum spend; you choose a daily budget and can stop at any time.
  • Value drives the price. "Car insurance" costs about R300 a click because a new policy is worth thousands of rand a year to an insurer. A cleaning job is worth less, so the clicks are cheaper.

The monthly maths

Your monthly ad cost is simply clicks times cost per click. Two illustrative examples, using the estimates above:

Illustrative: your clicks, prices and conversion rates will differ.

When SEO works out cheaper

SEO charges for the work, not the clicks. Once your pages, profile and links rank, the visitors keep coming without a price per click. That is why businesses that depend on the same searches every month usually shift budget from ads to SEO over time. Our Local plan, for example, is a once-off build from R14,950 and then from R4,950 a month (all prices), less than the ad spend in both examples above.

The catch is time. Ads start the same day; competitive organic rankings take months. Our guide to whether SEO is worth it has the break-even maths.

When Google Ads make sense

  • You need enquiries this week, not in three months.
  • You are testing a new offer, price or area before investing in pages for it.
  • You want extra reach during a short peak, such as a holiday season.
  • Your SEO is still building and you need calls in the meantime.

Many businesses run both at first, then cut the ads back as rankings arrive. We focus on the search side: SEO, Google Maps and AI answers.

Common questions

Is there a minimum spend for Google Ads in South Africa?

No. You set a daily budget and can change or pause it at any time. What you pay depends on the clicks you receive and what each one costs in the auction.

Why are some clicks so expensive?

Because the customer is worth a lot to the advertisers bidding for them. Insurance, debt, legal and financial searches cost the most; low-value, high-volume searches cost the least.

Can I pay Google to rank higher in the free results?

No. Paid ads and organic rankings are separate. Organic positions come from relevance and authority, which is what SEO builds.

Are Google Ads worth it for a small business?

They can be, for urgent demand or testing. For searches you need every month, the cost never stops, so most small businesses are better off building organic rankings and Maps visibility as well.
