How we built it
On 28 September 2026 we put 30 questions that South African buyers ask about SEO help (for example "What is the best SEO agency in South Africa?", "Which SEO company should I use in Durban?" and "How much does SEO cost in South Africa per month?") to three AI engines with live web search: Claude, OpenAI's Codex and Grok. That produced 60 answers. We recorded every web search the engines ran behind their answers (229 searches), every source they cited (620 citations) and every agency they named.
The list covers the top-rated search engine optimisation companies and digital agencies the engines named. This is one run per question, so treat the counts as a snapshot, not a league table. AI answers change from run to run and week to week.
What AI engines check before recommending an agency
The searches behind the answers show what the engines look for:
- Reviews. "Reviews" appeared in 73 of the 229 searches and "Clutch" in 45. Engines look for independent review counts and ratings before they name anyone.
- The current year. 50 searches added "2026". Engines want recent lists and recent evidence.
- Pricing and case studies. Engines search agencies' own sites for prices and case studies, then quote what they find.
- Directories they trust. The most cited sources were Clutch (81 citations), Semrush's agency directory (34), GoodFirms (19), Sortlist (16) and DesignRush (15).
