Free business directory listings in South Africa: where to list your business.

Which free listings actually help you get found, which give a link, and which to ignore.

By the Shown team · Updated 28 September 2026

The short answer

The best free South Africa business directory listings start with Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, because they feed the maps and AI assistants people use. After those come Hellopeter, Brabys, Yellow Pages SA, Snupit, Cylex, Hotfrog and Opendi. Most directory links are nofollow, so their real value is consistent business details that search engines and AI tools can trust.

The three listings to do first

Before any directory, claim the three listings that feed the maps on nearly every phone in the country:

These are the online business directories in our own listing engine for South African businesses, from national listings to small business directories. "Followed" means the listing passed a normal (dofollow) link when we last checked; "nofollow" links still help with consistency and discovery.

How to list your business properly

  1. Write one master record first: exact business name, address or service area, phone, website, hours, categories and a short and long description. Use it everywhere, character for character.
  2. Search before you create. Many directories already have an old listing for you. Claim and correct it; a second listing splits reviews and confuses search engines.
  3. Pick real categories. The closest match to what you sell, not the broadest one.
  4. Add photos and a proper description where the directory allows. Thin listings get less visibility inside the directory itself.
  5. Pace it. A few listings a day over a few weeks looks natural. Hundreds in one day does not.
  6. Log every listing with its URL and login, so you can update them all when something changes.

What to avoid

  • "Submit to 500 directories" services. They use networks of spam directories that nobody visits and that search engines ignore or distrust.
  • Paid "premium" placements on directories that send no real traffic. Check the directory's own visibility in Google first.
  • Different details on different sites. An old phone number on ten directories costs more than having no listing at all.

Rather have it done for you? Our directory listing service submits and syncs your details across all of these and more, paced and logged.

Common questions

How do I list my business for free in South Africa?

Start with Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, which are free and feed the maps people use. Then add free listings on Hellopeter, Brabys, Yellow Pages SA, Cylex, Hotfrog and Opendi, using identical details everywhere.

Are business directory listings still worth it in 2026?

The important ones are. Google, Bing and Apple listings drive map visibility directly, and consistent details across established directories help search engines and AI tools trust your business facts. Low-quality directories are not worth the time.

What is the best free business directory in South Africa?

Google Business Profile, by a long way. After that, Hellopeter for reviews and Brabys, Yellow Pages SA, Cylex, Hotfrog and Opendi as general directories.

Do directory listings help with ChatGPT and AI answers?

They can. AI engines pull business facts from maps, directories and review sites, and they are more likely to repeat details that agree across several sources.
