How to choose an SEO company in South Africa.
Ten questions that separate the agencies that build rankings from the ones that send reports.
To choose an SEO company in South Africa, pick the one that can show you, in writing, what it will build each month, where its own site ranks, how it earns links, that you will own every account, and how it reports from your own Google data. Published South African SEO packages run from about R2,500 to R25,000 a month; the deliverables matter more than the price.
Start with what you actually need
"SEO" covers very different jobs. Decide which one you are buying before you compare anyone:
- Local SEO: you serve one town or a few suburbs and most buyers call you. Google Maps, reviews and area pages matter most.
- National SEO: you sell a service or product across South Africa. Content, technical quality and links matter most.
- E-commerce SEO: you run an online store. Category pages, product data and site structure matter most.
- AI search (GEO and AEO): you want to be named when buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a recommendation. Mentions on trusted sources and quotable pages matter most.
A good SEO company will ask which of these you need in the first conversation. A weak one will sell you the same package whatever you say.
10 questions to ask any SEO company
- What exactly will you build each month? Pages, articles, fixes, links and listings, as numbers. "Ongoing optimisation" is not an answer.
- Which searches will you target, and why those? Look for searches with buyer intent and realistic difficulty, not vanity terms.
- Where does your own website rank? Search for "SEO company" plus your city. An agency that cannot rank itself is guessing with your money.
- How do you build links? You want outreach, PR, local and relevant sites. If the answer is packages of hundreds of links, walk away.
- Who owns the accounts and content? Your Google Business Profile, Search Console, Analytics, domain and every page should be in your name.
- How will you report? Positions for agreed searches, clicks and impressions from your Search Console, calls from your Business Profile, and a list of work done.
- How do you handle AI search? In 2026 an SEO company should be able to show you what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI say about your business today.
- What is the contract? A short minimum period is normal. Twelve months with no exit is not.
- Who does the work? Ask whether it is done in-house or passed to a subcontractor, and who writes the content.
- What will you fix first, and why? A specific answer after a quick look at your site is the best sign of a team that knows what it is doing.
Red flags
- Guaranteed first place. Google's guidance on hiring an SEO says that if someone guarantees you first place in search results, you should find someone else.
- Cheap bulk backlinks. "500 backlinks for R999" means spam networks, which can get a site penalised.
- Secret methods. Good SEO can be explained in plain English. Only the tools need to be private.
- Reports with charts but no work list. If nobody can say what was delivered, very little was.
- They keep your accounts. If they own your profile or domain, leaving becomes painful. That is often the point.
Agency, freelancer or in-house?
| Item | SEO agency | Freelancer | In-house hire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Businesses that need content, technical work and links at once | One clear job, such as a technical fix or a set of pages | Large sites with constant SEO work |
| Strengths | Several skills and tools under one roof | Lower cost, direct contact | Knows the business deeply |
| Watch for | Junior staff doing the work you were sold by a senior | Capacity and holidays; no backup | Needs tools, training and management |
What good reporting looks like
Every month you should be able to answer four questions from your report without a call: which agreed searches moved, how many clicks and calls came from Google, what was delivered, and what happens next month. Numbers should come from your own Google Search Console and Business Profile, not an agency's estimate.
The simplest test of all
Search for the thing you are buying. If you typed "best SEO company in South Africa" or asked an AI engine and found a company, that company has already shown you it can do the job. It is the one test that cannot be faked in a sales meeting.

Common questions
How much should an SEO company charge in South Africa?
Published packages from South African agencies range from about R2,500 to R25,000 a month (September 2026). Local businesses usually need less than national or e-commerce sites. Compare the deliverables, not only the price. See our SEO pricing guide.
How long should I give an SEO company before judging results?
Expect visible movement in Maps, technical health and some rankings within two to three months, and meaningful results on competitive searches within four to six. If nothing has been delivered after the first month, you do not need to wait that long.
Where can I find reviews of SEO companies?
Google reviews, platforms such as Clutch and DesignRush, and asking the agency for businesses you may speak to. Check that reviews describe specific results, not just friendliness.
